The film is based on the true story of the Dahomey Amazons. The movie casts Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes, and John Boyega.
The Woman King was directed by Gina Prince Bythewod from a screenplay she co-wrote with Dana Stevens. The film was produced by Cathy Schulman, Viola Davis, Julius Tennon and Maria Bell.
Synopsis
The film focuses on General Nanisca of the Dahomey Amazons which is an all female military regiment of the Kingdom of Dahomey. The movie depicts how the Dahomey Amazons “fought enemies who violated their home, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they have lived for.”
When the trailer premiered at the #ABFT2022, it received a 4 min long standing ovation.
