The Man of God is a Nollywood film currently trending on Netflix. Bolanle Austen Peters directed the movie.
The movie tells the story of a young man who leaves Christianity and the teachings of his parents. This is a result of his father’s harsh measures on him. He takes a journey into music. But becomes trapped between what he thinks is best and what his father has taught.
The movie is 1hr 15mins long. It features Nollywood stars such as: Akah Nnani, Osas Ighodaro, Prince Nelson Enwerem, Dorcas Shola Fapson, Atlanta Bridget Johnson. Other casts include: Shawn Faqua, Mawuli Gavor, Eucharist Anunobi, Patrick Doyle and many more.
ROLE INTERPRETATION
The actors and actresses deserve a round of applause. They were one with their character. Dorcas who played the role of Rekz gave a beautiful peformance. The lead actor Akah Nnani did an outstanding job. There’s also Eucharia Anunobi who played the role of an Igbo Bishop’s wife. Yes, it was quite funny and beautiful.
PLOT REVIEW
The Man of God is an upgraded and updated version of the Prodigal Son found in the Bible. There were holes that required fillings in the movie. It looked like a rushed project. Perhaps, if it was turned into a series; there will be proper plot development.
Firstly, the part where the Bishop and wife accosted Sammy King and wife about his affairs with ladies in the church could birth other scenes. Rather, it was killed off.
Secondly, we witnessed the part of a sister trying to get justice for her younger sister who died during abortion. The sub-story was also killed off and not heard about again. So, why bring it up in the first place?
Thirdly, How did Teju find out in writing about the money laundering and organ trafficking. This comes in as Pst Sammy didn’t want to know what the business entails when Rekz tried to tell him. How can one keep a document of what he doesn’t know?
Further Questions
- Why was there no in-depth story into the ministry of Samuel as a pastor? He became a pastor because of money, but we didn’t see that happen.
- Why did Samuel all of a sudden want to relocate to Canada?
- Joy returns after so many years with Zach. Why is there no explanation on why she ditched Sammy for Zach after the promises?
The writer gave we the audience, the freedom of imagination. A lot of stories and actions were left for the audience to fix however they want.
SETTINGS, CINEMATOGRAPHY, COSTUME and PRODUCTION
However, not minding the plot malfunction, the production was great. The costumes had a taste of ankara- an African element, which was beautiful.
The design, cinematography and location were all on point. There is no doubt that the production team’s job was amazing.
Kudos to Bolanle Austen Peters and her team for the job well done. Though we want to see better storylines and plot.
