Beyoncé has faced backlash from disability rights activists over a lyric with an ableist slur in her new studio album, Renaissance.
She used the ableist slur in Heated, the 11th track of the 16-track album. Heated contains the lyrics, “spazzing on that ass, spaz on that ass.”
In the United States, spaz means to go crazy. This, therefore, shows the relatedness of the word to the track – Heated.
However, the people in the U.K, some in the United States, and other countries consider it an insult to the disabled. This is because the phrase refers to a medical condition, spastic paralysis.
Beyoncé’s representative has said that the artiste will change the lyrics.
